One such occasion is the celebration of one’s culture, the very thing that makes San Francisco such a unique city to travel. About the Museum of African Diaspora
The Museum of African Diaspora is a museum that stands to celebrate African American cultures and does so through the lens of artwork. As the foundation states, through the lens of African Diaspora, we can learn more about this culture from historical and contemporary perspectives. There are a variety of exhibits on display in this museum that allows guests to learn about the history of African American culture as a form of artistic movement, which is demonstrated through the very name of the exhibitions: Origins, Movement, Adaptation, and Transformation.

The first of these exhibitions, Origins, focuses on the root of all people: Africa. The use of artwork in this exhibit gives visual examples of the different forms of expression that are used at the beginning of humankind, and how they evolved into social and artistic forms of communication. The exhibition of Movement then focuses more specifically on this adaptation as these cultures begin to move and develop, and how they changed with location and social normatives. The Adaptation exhibit then illustrates the change that comes with movement and illuminates art representative of repressive moments in African American history wherein art became an outlet for times of endurance and struggle. The exhibit on Transformation becomes an exhibition of forward thinking and hopefulness, as the artwork explores recent transformations in artistic expressions and identity, while also providing a positive outlook on times to come.

The Museum of African Diaspora also hosts events frequently. Often times, artists will host lectures about the pieces they submitted to the Museum, allowing conversations to be made about the cultural significance fo their work. Screenings are also held consistently within this museum, discussing the importance of artwork and all of its mediums. Lectures covering the importance of printed artwork and films are held within this museum as well, and more information on these upcoming events can be found here.

The Museum of African Diaspora is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
